Running for Barbara ♥️
On June 22, 2026, my mom, Barbara, passed away from stage 4 pancreatic cancer at the age of 66.
She was diagnosed on May 12th, just 41 days earlier. Like so many families affected by this disease, we had very little time to come to terms with her diagnosis before we lost her. It was a devastating whiplash.
My mom was a remarkable woman. She was endlessly warm, generous, and loving. When describing her to people who didn’t know her, I often find myself saying “I know I sound like I’m making her up.” To have been loved by her was my greatest privilege.
She was born and raised in Bermuda, and although she spent most of her adult life in Canada, this island remained a place she loved deeply. She took immense pride in being Bermudian and never actually got her Canadian citizenship because of this. When I started running a few years ago, she would bug me about signing up for the annual Bermuda marathon. Now I am running this event on January 17th, 2027 for her.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most difficult cancers to detect and treat. It is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, and despite progress in cancer research, outcomes remain poor.
I’m raising money for Pancreatic Cancer North America in my mom’s memory, to support research, earlier detection, and improved treatment options.
41 days was nowhere near enough time. My hope is that continued research will mean other families have more than we did.
Thank you to everyone who has supported my family over the past few months, and to anyone who chooses to contribute in her memory.
Families deserve more time.
