Why This Matters

Having spent the last three years getting to know this patient community, and having lost a close friend to pancreatic cancer, I have seen this disease up close. Too often, it is found too late, when options are limited and time is short. Pancreatic cancer is on track to become the second-leading cause of cancer-related death across North America, and rates are rising, especially among women under 55. Survival rates have barely budged in 40 years, even as outcomes for many other cancers have improved.
Thanks to recent breakthroughs in precision treatment, pancreatic cancer is on the cusp of transformation. But we aren’t there yet and the best pathway to survival remains early detection.
And that is why we gather at these runs. To raise critical funds for early detection. But also to look one another in the eye, with a shared understanding of what this cancer looks and feels like, the impact it has on individuals and their loved ones, and what we must do collectively do to change its trajectory.
